Do You Really Need to Own a Car?

This may seem like a strange question especially from an author who lives in Los Angeles California. I have lived in Los Angeles since 1993 and have driven a vehicle from then till early this year 2003 at which time I gave my 1989 Chevrolet AstroVan to charity and started to begin a new and exciting journey through life.

The first thing I did before I donated my vehicle was to determine just how much money I was spending to actually have a vehicle. You'd be amazed. You may want to
calculate the cost of owning your vehicle.

MONTHLY PAYMENTS

VEHICLE  INSURANCE

LICENSE REGISTRATION

SMOG CHECK ( EVERY TWO YEARS )

GASOLINE

ADDITIVES

UPKEEP

MAINTENANCE

WASHING AND WAXING

AAA ROAD SERVICE

PARKING

These are just off the top of my head. There is also a concern  that someone may decide to steal your vehicle.

Isn't it a shame that not only do we have to take care of all of the items listed above, we also have to worry about someone actually stealing our vehicle.

In Los Angeles the crooks are so bold that they walk up to your car when you are in it and tell you to get out. Most of the time they are not that gentle.

How absolutely ridiculous!

Well, I donated my vehicle to a local charity and I no longer own a car. It really isn't that bad, in fact, it's quite fascinating.

Now, let's understand that for those of you that work for someone else and have to drive a considerable distance each day this may not work at this time. Yet, it still is a mental exercise that can cause you to
consider doing it in the future.

Let's not forget the soccer mom's and all the driving that is done in your active home. At first glance, you may not want to even think about this. Again, read the entire newsletter and understand that there will be a time in your life that this can work for you and your immediate family.

Now, how can you even consider not owning a car? Let's look at the other types of transportation that you can take advantage of in order to get you back and forth to wherever you want to go during your life.

Here is a list of some other possibilities for transportation:

RENT A CAR

RENT A FANCY CAR

RENT A CHAUFFEURED VEHICLE

RENT A LIMOUSINE

TAXI

SHUTTLE

RENT A MOTORCYCLE

TAKE A BUS

RIDE A BIKE

WALK

All of the buses here in Los Angeles have bike racks on the front of the bus so you can ride to the bus stop, put your bike on the front of the bus, proceed to your next point, and ride your bike the rest of the way to your destination, and back.

Do you think that this may make a difference in your weight and how great you feel each day?

You may say, "What about the additional time to get to where you have to go?" and I say "The savings in time and money in not having to find a parking space downtown LA is amazing."

Not only that, the cost of transportation with a bus is only 55 cents ( including transfer ) to get to your destination and back. $1.10 cents is less than the cost of a gallon of gasoline.

Because I work out of my home I plan to go out on certain days and work at home on certain days. In fact, I have what I call Leisure Days ( when I do absolutely no work, just fun, all day long ) Prep Days ( when I get prepared to work ) on a Function Day ( this is a complete work day, at my home office, in which I don't go out, except locally, and spend all my day working and producing income ).

During a typical week I usually have 5 leisure days and two work days. Actually my schedule permits me to set up my Prep Days in the morning in time to have a Function Day in the afternoon and evening.

You need to understand that I have been coaching and training for over 46 years and that's the very reason that I can command only two Function Days per week along with 5 Leisure Days. My Leisure Days are spent going to some attraction, going to a movie, out to lunch or dinner with a friend or associate and just about anything that I want to do.

I have many long term projects that will eventually be completed and then I set new goals that take much of
my time.

I have reached a time in my life ( 62yrs Young ) that I can literally do whatever I want to do, whenever I want to do it.

Because of the changes I have made in my life I have reached a time in my life that I am very close to a "stress free life."

Sometimes I go to bed around 11:30pm and wake up, like today, at 3:30am, get up, turn on my computer and write this newsletter. It's now 5:16am and I need to prepare for my Leisure Day ( Wednesday ) in order to get a couple of things done in the early morning and then I'm off to the movies.

I'll be taking the bus to Burbank and going to see
"Pirates of the Caribbean"

One of the things I do each morning is watch 5 minutes of traffic reporting in order to remind myself of what others are going through to get around, here in Los Angeles.

When I see the traffic, the accidents, the cost of lives, the cost in pollution, the dependence on oil, and the variety of other negatives I simply sit back and enjoy the fact that I have reached a time in my life where I don't own a car...
