Story Number THREE – 142 Words Per Minute

In June 1959, just after high school, I began working full time for a trucking company called Terminal Transport.
I was a biller / typist and for approximately eight hours a day I would type bills of lading on a computer.
We would receive bills of lading from the company rate clerks and then type the billing information
into the computer which converted this information into a code strip approximately one inch wide.

My mother was a private secretary and I used to marvel as a youngster, when she would bring
typing home and I could watch her type super fast. Because of this, when I got to high school, I took
typing and became very efficient. When I went to work for Terminal Transport
the union steward said that billers had to type at least 125 bills of lading per eight hour shift.
I could do that easy and one day I decided to see how fast I could go and I typed
250 bills of lading in eight hours.

The union steward told me I was crazy in thinking that the company would pay me more money
for more work completed in eight hours. I was young and stubborn so I decided to test the waters.
On Monday of each week I would type 250 bills of lading, Tuesday thru Friday I would
type 125 exactly. After about three weeks of this my boss called me into his office
and after some small talk asked me about my typing.
He wanted to know what was so special about Mondays?

I replied that it had nothing to do with the day of the week and he said "great, then you
will be typing 250 bills of lading five days a week."

My response was that "that was very possible except that my last 3 paychecks
didn't reflect any increase in pay due to the increase in number of bills typed."

He responded by saying "Well, you know we can't pay you over union scale!" and I said
that I understood that quite differently. The fact was that they couldn't pay me UNDER union scale,
however, they could pay me anything over union scale and all they had to do is decide to do it.
Well, we went back and forth and finally he said that he would talk to the terminal manager
and see what he could do...

A few days later he called me into his office and said that he would put me in charge
of the billing department on the grave yard shift ( midnight to 8am ) and I had
to make sure that all billing was done by 8AM each morning and after 30 days he
would give me a raise.

I agreed and after two weeks he called me on the phone with congratulations and told me
he was authorizing a 25 cent per hour raise effective immediately and I gave him
two weeks notice.

Somehow I was having a difficult time understanding why he expected me to perform
at twice the pace and my reward was $2.00 per day when he was saving the salary of another biller.

I left the company two weeks later and went to college. My fastest typing speed on an
electric typewriter reached 142 words per minute with no mistakes. Today, I type between 80
and 100 words per minute.
