Story Number TWO – First Business at 15yrs Old

My father took my mother and I to Bass Lake Indiana for a two-week vacation.
During that vacation my father suffered a heart attack and was taken to the closest hospital.
My mother and I had to return home so she could go to work and I could go back to school and
it was lucky that my father had taught me to drive because that was the only way that my
mother and I could have gotten home.

I was only 15 years old and when my father returned home he told me that I would be able to buy a car,
actually, he would buy the vehicle and I would have to make the payments. Kind of a reward
for helping out the family. That was great except the only time that I could drive
the car, before I reached 16, was with him. So most of the time was spent designing things
for the car. We bought a 1956 Mercury Convertible. It was red and white with a white top and stick shift.

I wanted it to be different and so the first thing I designed was a center piece for the four
Cadillac hubcaps
that I had gotten ( free ) from a friend of mine who worked in a junkyard. I designed a clear plastic
insert with a white rose and three green leaves surrounding the rose. The final touch
was a black felt background.

The design was easy, now I had to find a company that would bring my design
to reality. I sat down and called plastic companies in the yellow pages. Most of them
said that they handled other types of plastic and that they wouldn't be able to help me.

Well, I was persistent and I continued calling until I reached the second to the last name
in the book and he said that he didn't do that kind of work, however, there was a company
that was not listed in the phone book that might. He gave me the number and sure
enough the owner of that company agreed to look at my design.

On October 24th, 1957, my sixteenth birthday, I drove my masterpiece to the local MacDonald's
where everybody hung out with their great looking cars. As soon as I pulled into the
parking lot I was approached by a guy who drove a 1932 Ford Roadster who admired
my hubcaps, asked me where I got them and where he could buy a pair.

I told him that I had designed them and that he could buy this pair with a guarantee that I
would not produce another pair exactly like them. He paid me $80 for four hubcaps
with the inserts. The inserts had cost me $5 each and you know where I got the hubcaps.

That was the start of CUSTOM ENTERPRISES, Everything Custom Made from Plastic.

I worked this company part time for two years, netting $5,000.00 which was 
my first exposure to running a business.

SPECIAL NOTE: This company was run on a part time basis. My only cost was $6.95 for
a thousand business cards. I then went to custom car shows and carried pictures of what I had done
for others. People placed orders every show. 

I did not have any inventory, because everything was custom made. This allowed me to come up
with a formula for the business, and the formula that I still use today, 46 years later. CDW.

FORMULA: Get the information from the new client.
Tell him that you need to calculate the cost at your shop and will get back to them in a couple days.
( you then go back to your secret manufacturer who will actually make the product )

When your cost is $10 you multiply your cost by 4 times or $40 ( retail ).

Your deposit from the client before you make the custom product is 1/2 of the retail price or $20.00
( at this point you have collected your total cost to make the product and an additional $10 for expenses )

When you deliver the product to the client you collect the balance of $20.00 which is pure profit.

THIS "FORMULA" WORKS NO MATTER HOW MUCH THE PRODUCT COSTS
( your custom cost x 4 = retail. Collect 1/2 deposit and the balance upon delivery )
